Icelandic Highlands | 2014
Can confidently say this will be the coolest ride I ever hitch.
The Austrian couple, Moritz and Luisa, who own this van quit their jobs three years ago, completely gutted and rebuilt the interior of the vehicle so it’s now a super comfortable living space and have been driving it ALL around the world ever since.
They picked me up at the edge of a river that looked too dangerous to ford safely on foot on my way towards Landmannalaugar from where I was hiking towards Þórsmörk. We drove 60 or 70km on one of the most incredible roads I’ve ever been on. Along rough mountain tracks, around active and dormant volcanos and through unbridged rivers with almost constant views of glaciers only a few hundred meters from either side of the road. It was amazing.
Towards the evening we finally arrived, they dropped me off at the campsite, we exchanged email addresses and then they set off again to spend the night somewhere even more remote.
Their next trip after they spend another month or so in Iceland is driving the length of Chile after travelling there by cargo ship.
Tiny bit jealous of their lifestyle I think.
